2009 Day at the Capitol Recap
Over 35 Aging Services of Michigan and Michigan Assisted Living Association members and staff gathered in a Senate committee room for the 2009 Day at the Capitol. Members had the opportunity to observe and participate in a highly condensed version of the legislative process.
Participants kicked the day off with a presentation by Janet Olszewski, Director - Michigan Department of Community Health along with other key legislative members. Ms. Olszewski stated she expects Michigan in the future to have a smaller population with fewer high paying manufacturing jobs, less tax revenue and to more closely resemble a southern State overall. She summarized MDCH’s priorities for long term care, including:
- Implementation of the Governor’s LTC Task Force recommendations through nine Process Action Teams,
- Expansion of the MI Choice Waiver Program, and
- Combining waiver services with affordable housing through partnering with MSHDA, MDCH and private developers like American House.
Director Olszewski also indicated that there was no reliable set of recovery guidelines for States responding to dramatic downsizing of a major industry. The recovery strategies used by Ohio to recover from the decline in steel mills or Connecticut’s decline in textile manufacturing jobs are not recent enough to be helpful for Michigan’s current decline in auto manufacturing jobs.
